    Session 1: Income Tax Planning for Special Needs Families: Medical Expense Deductions, Credits, and Financing Strategies with Thomas M. Brinker

    This session will focus on maximizing income tax deductions and credits for families caring for individuals with special needs. We will explore items deductible from adjusted gross income (AGI) to determine taxable income, specifically emphasizing the expanded medical expense rules. Participants will gain insights into managing timing issues and addressing unique considerations for itemized deductions and expanded credits introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and other recent legislation. Additionally, the session will examine financing strategies related to medical expense deductions, such as the use of retirement plan distributions and home equity loans, and the implications of the tax benefit rule. We will also explore the interaction between medical expense and home equity deductions, offering practical tax planning solutions for professionals working with special needs families.  

    Session 2: Financial Options for Protecting Clients & Their Families from The Cost of Long-Term Care and Tax Aspects

    This session will focus on protecting Clients & Their Families from the Cost of Long-Term Care, with a focus on the difference between IRC 7702b (life insurance with accelerated death benefit for chronic illness riders) and IRC 101g (life insurance with long-term care benefits including asset-based long term care insurance), and why it matters with Don Quante.


    Speakers:

    Thomas M. Brinker, Jr., CPA/PFS, ChFC®, ChSNC®, CGMA, CFE, AEP

    Thomas M. Brinker, Jr., CPA/PFS, ChFC®, ChSNC®,CGMA, CFE, AEP is Professor of Accounting at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania. He also serves as Chair for the American College’s Center for Special Needs in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.  He graduated cum laude from Saint Joseph’s University in Accountancy, and holds master’s degrees in Taxation and Accounting from Widener University. In addition to earning his J.D., Professor Brinker earned an LL.M. in International Taxation from Regent University School of Law, where he received the distinction of “Outstanding Graduate” in his class. Mr. Brinker is a member of the American, Florida, and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants and the International Bar Association. In addition to presenting nationally and internationally on various tax topics, he has published dozens of articles in numerous journals, including The Journal of Accountancy, The Journal of International Taxation, The Tax Adviser, The CPA Journal, The Journal of Practical Estate Planning, and The Journal of Financial Services Professionals.

    In addition to lecturing in the graduate and professional programs of several Philadelphia Universities, Professor Brinker is a Tax Consultant to the financial services industry and local CPA and law firms. He has received awards for teaching excellence, including the PICPA’s Educator of the Year Award, the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching, and Professor of the Year Award. At the undergraduate level, Tom lectures primarily in tax accounting, individual taxation, and taxation for closely held businesses. He also lectures and writes extensively on the financial and tax planning implications encountered by families with individuals having special needs. Prior to joining the faculty of Arcadia University and the American College of Financial Services, Mr. Brinker was founding partner in a local CPA firm and member of both the audit and tax departments of Coopers & Lybrand and Arthur Young & Company.


    Don Quante, CLTC

    Don Quante, CLTC serves as Principal at Simplicity Asset-Based LTC and is responsible for defining the subsidiary’s strategic direction as part of the Simplicity Group of Companies. Quante is also responsible for the continuing development of the Million Dollar Advisor system, the preeminent asset-based long-term care planning program. Quante is a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table Top of the Table. Quante has more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, and he is a nationally acclaimed speaker and trainer on the topic of long-term care and retirement income planning. Quante is the author of Tax-Free Money for Long-Term Care and Don’t Go Broke in a Nursing Home.

    Gregg Schlaudecker is a seasoned executive and financial services leader based in Jamestown, North Carolina. As Chief Operating Officer at AdaptFirst Tax and Investments, Gregg drives operational excellence and strategic direction for a mid-sized CPA firm. His career includes influential roles such as Executive Director for The Financial Service Advisors Council and Director at the Society of Financial Service Professionals, where he led regional chapters and advanced the profession through innovative leadership and collaboration. Gregg’s expertise spans financial planning, risk management, and education—evidenced by his founding of Emerald College Planning, helping families strategize college affordability. He has managed comprehensive financial planning operations and led large insurance sales departments, leveraging knowledge gained from diverse roles including military service as a U.S. Army Captain. Known for his tech savvy and commitment to professional development, Gregg also enjoys cycling, hiking, bird watching, reading, and mentoring others in finance and technology both inside and outside the office.
